Learn the fundamentals of typography and learn to apply it in various moods and contexts. This hands-on and rigorous 10-day program will arm you with an arsenal of tools starting with the history and classification of type, calligraphy for sensitizing rhythm and structure of letterforms to providing a glimpse into the world of type design towards the end.

Pre-requisites and supplies

  1. A computer

  2. Adobe Illustrator/InDesign installed

  3. Basic stationery will be provided although 10–15 tracing sheets, reed pens, and a pack of chiseled markers will be required.

  4. Reading up on typeface anatomy.

 

What you’ll learn

  • Where it all began: history and classification of type.

  • Understand letterforms and their correlation to writing.

  • Ability to decode moods and feelings different letterforms evoke and using this skill to apply it in our own contexts.

  • Mix-matching and pairing typefaces.

  • Legibility, readability, optical compensation.

  • Taking your letterforms from paper to screen: understanding the basics of typeface design, drawing with vectors and making it into a working and installable on your computer.
